How to Freeze a Row in Excel and Google Sheets

How to Freeze Rows and Columns in Excel

Freezing the Top Row

  1. Select the Top Row: Click on any cell within the row you want to freeze. Typically, this is the first row containing your headers.
  2. Go to the View Tab: On the Ribbon, click the View tab.
  3. Freeze Panes: In the Window group, click Freeze Panes. A drop-down menu will appear.
  4. Select Freeze Top Row: Click Freeze Top Row. The top row will now remain visible as you scroll down the worksheet.

Freezing the First Column

  1. Select the First Column: Click on any cell within the column you want to freeze. Typically, this is the first column containing your identifiers.
  2. Go to the View Tab: On the Ribbon, click the View tab.
  3. Freeze Panes: Click Freeze Panes in the Window group.
  4. Select Freeze First Column: Click Freeze First Column. The first column will now remain visible as you scroll horizontally across the worksheet.

Freezing Multiple Rows or Columns

  1. Select the Cell: Click on the cell just below the rows and to the right of the columns you want to freeze. For example, to freeze the first two rows and the first column, select cell B3.
  2. Go to the View Tab: Click the View tab on the Ribbon.
  3. Freeze Panes: In the Window group, click Freeze Panes.
  4. Select Freeze Panes: Choose the first option in the drop-down menu, Freeze Panes. Excel will freeze all the rows above and columns to the left of your selected cell.

Unfreezing Panes

If you want to unfreeze the rows or columns:

  1. Go to the View Tab: Click the View tab.
  2. Unfreeze Panes: In the Window group, click Freeze Panes and select Unfreeze Panes.

  3. Unfreeze: Select No rows or No columns to unfreeze all previously frozen rows or columns.
